Fox Field, Lancaster |
| General William J. Fox Airfield, or Fox Field, is a relatively quiet place. Our interest primarily lay in the US Forest Service airtanker base with two MD-87s and a Skycrane, and the fact that the Milestones of Flight Museum used to be here.
That Museum closed in 2015. I've no idea what's left in the big hangar, donated by Kermit Weeks in exchange for a rare Havoc, but their three old piston-engined transports remain outside. Their destiny seems rather gloomy. As with Cal Fire, the pilot from Ericson Aero Tanker was very helpful, and showed us around his MD-87 and the rest of the airfield – many thanks to him for making our visit so rewarding. By the way Erickson Air-Crane and Erickson Aero Tanker are not related at all. Jack Erickson sold his original Air-Crane company which converts, leases, and operates the helicopters. He then went on to set up Air Tanker as a separate fixed-wing operation. We were here on the 5th May. |
